1 | SENATE RESOLUTION | ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, About 20% of people, amounting to approximately | ||||||
3 | 66 million Americans, live with a condition which could be | ||||||
4 | considered an invisible disability; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Nearly half of Americans are living with a | ||||||
6 | chronic medical condition, totaling 165 million people; | ||||||
7 | invisible disabilities include disabilities, chronic | ||||||
8 | illnesses, chronic pain, and injuries, and they may impact | ||||||
9 | people in the form of minor impairments to completely | ||||||
10 | disabling; and

11 | WHEREAS, As created and defined by the Invisible | ||||||
12 | Disabilities Association (IDA), the term "invisible | ||||||
13 | disabilities" distinguishes disabilities not readily apparent | ||||||
14 | based upon just looking at someone, leading this person to | ||||||
15 | fight a battle seldom acknowledged by the outside world; and

16 | WHEREAS, Without the obvious signs of disability, many of | ||||||
17 | those with invisible disabilities are accused of faking and | ||||||
18 | exaggerating their conditions, translating into a lack of | ||||||
19 | funding, accommodations, medical resources, medical diagnoses, | ||||||
20 | and overall support for those with invisible disabilities; and

21 | WHEREAS, The IDA strives to encourage, educate, and |

1 | connect people and organizations touched by illness, pain, and | ||||||
2 | disability; with the help of the IDA, the world can become a | ||||||
3 | place where people living with illness, pain, and disability | ||||||
4 | will no longer be invisible; therefore, be it

5 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
6 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare October 20 | ||||||
7 | through October 26, 2024 as Invisible Disabilities Week in the | ||||||
8 | State of Illinois.
