2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the
death of Justice John P. Schmidt, who passed away | ||||||
4 | on December 19, 2017; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt was born in Springfield to Phillip | ||||||
6 | H. and Susan Conavay Schmidt on January 8, 1965; he attended | ||||||
7 | Farmingdale Grade School and Lanphier High
School, where he | ||||||
8 | played center for the football team for four years; he had | ||||||
9 | dreams of a career in law and attended Western Illinois | ||||||
10 | University and the University of Tulsa College of Law; he | ||||||
11 | married Robin Lee DuRocher in Springfield on October 5, 2001; | ||||||
12 | and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt worked as a Special Assistant | ||||||
14 | United States
Attorney from 1990 to 1992; from 1992 to 1995, he | ||||||
15 | worked as an Assistant State's Attorney and as First Assistant
| ||||||
16 | State's Attorney for four years; he was appointed the State's | ||||||
17 | Attorney for Sangamon
County in 1999; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt served as Sangamon County State's | ||||||
19 | Attorney for 11 years before
being appointed a Circuit Court | ||||||
20 | Judge for the Illinois Circuit in 2010; he was appointed as a | ||||||
21 | Justice of the 4th District Appellate Court by the Illinois | ||||||
22 | Supreme Court on December 7,
2017; and

1 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt served on numerous boards, | ||||||
2 | including the Illinois State's Attorney
Appellate Prosecutor's | ||||||
3 | Office and the Illinois State's Attorneys Association for which | ||||||
4 | he served
as president in 2004; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt loved to travel with his wife and | ||||||
6 | son, enjoyed playing trivia,
completing crossword puzzles, and | ||||||
7 | spending time with the family dog, Macaroni; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt was a devoted husband and father, | ||||||
9 | a highly respected attorney,
prosecutor, and judge, and a | ||||||
10 | beloved Springfield citizen; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt was preceded in death by his | ||||||
12 | parents; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, Justice Schmidt is survived by his wife, Robin; | ||||||
14 | his son, John "Johnny" P. Schmidt; his uncle and aunt, Eric and | ||||||
15 | Joanne Schmidt; his in-laws, Norma Seibert and Robert DuRocher; | ||||||
16 | and his brothers-in-law, Ryan (Melinda) DuRocher and Scott | ||||||
17 | (Toni) Seibert; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews,
| ||||||
18 | colleagues, and friends; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |

1 | Justice John P. Schmidt, and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
2 | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
3 | further
| ||||||
4 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
5 | presented to the family of Justice Schmidt as an expression of | ||||||
6 | our deepest sympathy.
