2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of John Thomas Ahern of Silvis, who passed | ||||||
4 | away on August 8, 2016; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, John Ahern was born on September 14, 1935 in | ||||||
6 | Waterloo, Iowa; his parents were James and Ruth Flynn Ahern; he | ||||||
7 | married Susan Jansen on June 13, 1964 at St. Joseph's Church in | ||||||
8 | Rock Island; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, John Ahern attended St. Columbkille's Grade | ||||||
10 | School, Loras Academy, and Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, | ||||||
11 | where he graduated in 1960; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, John Ahern served his country as a United States | ||||||
13 | Marine; while in the Marine Corps, he was awarded a role in the | ||||||
14 | movie "The DI" starring Jack Webb; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, John Ahern worked for the Illinois Central | ||||||
16 | Railroad and the Rock Island Lines Railroad in Silvis before | ||||||
17 | retiring after 20 years from John Deere Harvester Works in East | ||||||
18 | Moline; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, John Ahern served his community as an Alderman in | ||||||
20 | Silvis; he was a member of the Alleman High School Board of |

1 | Education and the St. Mary's East Moline School Board; he also | ||||||
2 | served as a Trustee for Black Hawk College, earning Trustee of | ||||||
3 | the Year in 2003; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, John Ahern was an East Moline and Silvis Rotarian, | ||||||
5 | a member of Knights of Columbus Council 716 and the Quad Cities | ||||||
6 | St. Patrick's Society; he was also Grand Marshal of the Quad | ||||||
7 | Cities St. Patrick's Day Grand Parade in 1998; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, John Ahern was preceded in death by his parents | ||||||
9 | and his children, Mary Colleen, Terrence, Michael, and Timothy; | ||||||
10 | and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, John Ahern is survived by his wife, Susan; his | ||||||
12 | children, Catherine (Bob) Clementi, Sean (Julie) Ahern, Dennis | ||||||
13 | (Lisa) Ahern, Regina (Brian) Knobloch, Kevin (Amy) Ahern, Brian | ||||||
14 | Ahern, Seamus (Amanda) Ahern, and Guila Meghan Ahern; 24 | ||||||
15 | grandchildren; two great-grandsons and one on the way; his | ||||||
16 | brother, Dr. James Ahern; and his sister, Judith McDonald; | ||||||
17 | therefore, be it

18 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL | ||||||
19 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||
20 | family and friends, mourn the passing of John Thomas Ahern; and | ||||||
21 | be it further
