    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Melvin Simon's lifetime of achievements.

    Whereas, Melvin Simon was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 21, 1926; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon earned an accounting degree from City College of New York after graduating from Bronx High School of Science; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon was drafted by the United States Army and sold encyclopedias to supplement his military pay while stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon became the leasing agent for Eastgate Shopping Mall after leaving the Army; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon utilized these experiences to build shopping centers, shape America's landscape and revolutionize the retail shopping experience; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon built the Simon Property Group, became the world's largest owner of shopping malls and developed the Mall of America; and


    Whereas, Melvin Simon transformed downtown Indianapolis by constructing Circle Centre Mall and purchasing the Indiana Pacers to ensure that they did not relocate; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon was a philanthropist who donated hundreds of millions of dollars to worthy causes, made one of the largest cancer research donations ever recorded and created the Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center at Indiana University; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon passed away in September of 2009; and

    Whereas, Melvin Simon was loved and is remembered by presidents, governors, senators, CEO's and Pacers fans around the world, but most importantly by his family; Therefore

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors Melvin Simon for his contributions to the State of Indiana, the City of Indianapolis, and the United States of America.
    SECTION 2. That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmits a copy of the resolution to the family of Melvin Simon.
