RESOLUTION
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Indiana's rural
electric cooperatives and the Hoosiers Power the World project.
Whereas, Indiana Statewide Association of Rural Electric
Cooperatives initiated the Hoosiers Power the World project
to recognize 2012 being designated the International Year of
Cooperatives by the United Nations;
Whereas, Local Indiana cooperatives contributed
equipment, materials, and tools valued at more than
$750,000, and 17 cooperatives donated their skills and
expertise as part of the largest international endeavor
undertaken by Indiana's electric cooperatives since being
incorporated by rural Hoosiers in the 1930s;
Whereas, 32 professional linemen and volunteers from
electric cooperatives throughout Indiana sacrificed their time
and the comforts of home to bring electricity to two isolated
villages in the northwestern mountains of Guatemala in
August and September 2012; and
Whereas, The Hoosier spirit of cooperation that was
embodied in the formation of Indiana's rural electric
cooperatives in the 1930s is now echoed in the wilderness of
Guatemala, as the municipal utility of Hoja Blanca has
chosen to form the first electric cooperative in Guatemala
after its experience with the Hoosiers Power the World
project: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes and
applauds Indiana's electric cooperatives and those who contributed to
the Hoosiers Power the World project for exuding the Hoosier spirit in
working to bring reliable electricity to the villages of Guatemala for the
first time.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to each of Indiana's
electric cooperatives.
