RESOLUTION
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION memorializing Richard "Rick"
Joseph Borries.
Whereas, Richard "Rick" Joseph Borries died suddenly on
Saturday, November 14, 2009;
Whereas, A graduate of Reitz Memorial High School in
Evansville, he attended St. Edward's University in Austin,
Texas, and he received his undergraduate and master's
degrees in education from Indiana State University;
Whereas, While serving at Harrison High School, Central
High School, and as the supervisor of social studies for the
Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, Richard
improved the lives of countless students through his
dedication and service;
Whereas, A life-long resident of Evansville, Richard was
dedicated to his students, working toward his educational
goal, "to inspire and engage his students";
Whereas, Throughout his life, Richard was extremely
involved in assisting his students to become productive
citizens by helping to establish the Close-Up Program, which
takes high school students to Washington, D.C., to see how
the federal government works, and participating in "We the
People," a constitutional law competition for high school
students;
Whereas, After retiring from the Evansville Vanderburgh
School Corporation, Richard became the director of external
affairs for AT&T and was instrumental in bringing the AT&T
call center to Evansville;
Whereas, Richard served as an ambassador for Indiana,
visiting Japan, Korea, Latvia, and Ireland and hosting
visitors from these countries when they traveled to the United
States to learn about our political system;
Whereas, Always passionately involved in government,
Richard spent 16 years as a Vanderburgh County
Commissioner;
Whereas, Richard helped support and fund the building of
the overpass at the University of Southern Indiana, the new
Vanderburgh Auditorium, and the expansions of Lynch and
Burkhardt roads;
Whereas, Richard also helped attract Toyota to southern
Indiana and was instrumental in bringing the first casino to
Indiana;
Whereas, In recognition of his many accomplishments,
Richard was awarded a Lifetime Achievement award by the
Democrat Central Committee in 2007 and a Sagamore of the
Wabash by Governors Evan Bayh and Frank O'Bannon; and
Whereas, Richard Joseph Borries' commitment to public
education spanned 37 years while he pursued his passion of
improving the lives of all he served: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly expresses its
sincerest condolences to the family of Richard "Rick" Joseph Borries
and its gratitude for his many contributions to his community and his
state.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to the family of
Richard "Rick" Joseph Borries.
