RESOLUTION
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring Suzanne Whitton.
Whereas, Suzanne Whitton is Indiana's 2013 Teacher of the
Year;
Whereas, Suzanne Whitton was selected as Indiana's 2013
Teacher of the Year by a Department of Education committee
made up of past Teacher of the Year honorees, external
community and education leaders, and Department of
Education personnel selected after interviewing and visiting
the classrooms of the 10 finalists;
Whereas, Suzanne Whitton teaches visual arts in grades K
through 5 and is the Kindergarten Language Arts
Intervention Teacher at Delaware Trail Elementary School
in Brownsburg;
Whereas, Before coming to Delaware Trail Elementary
School, Suzanne Whitton taught Visual Arts to students in
grades 6 to 8 at Brownsburg West Middle School and served
as the school's Related Arts and Visual Arts Department
Head;
Whereas, Suzanne Whitton has held a variety of leadership
positions focused on student activities and interests,
service-learning, technology, and mentoring new teachers;
Whereas, Suzanne Whitton feels that her most important accomplishments have been those achieved by her students and believes her students' successes are a reflection of her
teaching philosophy, which includes nourishing students'
artistic talent and showing them they can make a difference
in the world;
Whereas, Suzanne Whitton received undergraduate degrees
in Art Education and Fine Arts and a Masters of Art
Education from the Herron School of Art and Design at
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis;
Whereas, As Indiana's 2013 Teacher of the Year, Suzanne
Whitton is the state's nominee for the 2013 National Teacher
of the Year honor; and
Whereas, It is fitting that excellence in our state's teachers
be given widespread recognition: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly, on behalf of the
people of Indiana, congratulates Suzanne Whitton on being selected
Indiana's 2013 Teacher of the Year.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Suzanne Whitton
and the principal of Delaware Trail Elementary School.
