RESOLUTION No. ________
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the first-grade
class of Attica Elementary School in Attica, Indiana
.
Whereas, The first grade students at Attica Elementary
School are participating in a project sponsored by the Indiana
University Jacobs School of Music;
Whereas, The violin project was developed by Brenda
Brenner, a music education professor at Jacobs School of
Music, after research showed that students who played string
instruments performed better academically than those who did
not;
Whereas, Research indicates that students of the arts
outperform their peers on the SAT and that music instruction
topped computer skills instruction in developing a student's
abstract reasoning skills;
Whereas, Indiana University graduate student Kasia Bugaj
travels to Attica Elementary twice a week to teach first graders
how to play the violin;
Whereas, The violin curriculum was developed to include
a connection to math and reading;
Whereas, Attica, a community of 3,200 people, is a steel town whose young people are not as familiar with the violin as with other musical genres and whose school corporation could never have begun a violin project without assistance;
Whereas, Through the generosity of the community and Ann
Harrison, whose husband is co-owner of the local steel mill, the
project came to be;
Whereas, Teachers and administrators see the possibility
of expanding the program to include more grades and its
potential to change the community's educational infrastructure,
where current census figures show less than 10 percent of
residents have a bachelor's degree; and
Whereas, The lives of these young people have been
changed for the better through the introduction of the violin
project into their lives: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives
acknowledges the progress being made by the first grade students at
Attica Elementary School who are involved in the violin project
sponsored by Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to Superintendent
Judy Bush and Dusty Goodwin, principal of Attica Elementary School.
