RESOLUTION No. _____



    A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the Hawk Band Metis of Indiana.

    Whereas, The members of the 118th General Assembly have learned of the growth and progress of the Hawk Band Metis of Indiana and take this opportunity to honor these descendants of the first Americans;

    Whereas, The Hawk Band Metis of Indiana was the first organized Band of Metis in Indiana, with a history going back to 1863;

    Whereas, The Hawk Band Metis of Indiana is presently made up of over 1,300 adult Metis tribe members and their children, with over 30 million Metis in America although most are not presently affiliated with any particular Band of Metis;

    Whereas, The Metis, which means "mixed blood," are descendants of both Aboriginal Americans and the European and Asian settlers in the Americas, and, in many cases, children of the first European settlers in Indiana;

    Whereas, The Hawk Band Metis of Indiana provide spiritual leadership for the Metis and other Aboriginal Americans and educate and ordain clergy in ancient and

modern spiritual beliefs;

    Whereas, The Hawk Band Metis of Indiana preserve the history and culture of the Metis and of numerous tribes, including Ojibway, Chippewa, Cree, Sioux, and Cheyenne, by passing on the traditions, ceremonies, and language;

    Whereas, The Hawk Band Metis of Indiana actively educate their children, teaching them honor, respect for elders, respect for the environment, respect for all people, wood lore, ceremony, aboriginal language, and self-respect; and

    Whereas, The Hawk Band Metis of Indiana is the largest tribe of its kind in Indiana maintaining the traditions and languages of their ancestors: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives

of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,

the Senate concurring:


    SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the Hawk Band Metis of Indiana as among the first settlers of Indiana and salutes the people of the Hawk Band Metis of Indiana for their many contributions.
    SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a copy of this resolution to Terry Harris.
