A RESOLUTION recognizing the 100th anniversary of
the Greensburg Daily News Cheer Fund.
Whereas, James Caskey, publisher of the Greensburg Daily
News, created the Cheer Fund in 1911 to help bring the joy of
Christmas to needy children and their families in Greensburg;
Whereas, When Mr. Caskey died in 1915, his wife, Mabel,
took over management of the fund until 1918;
Whereas, In 1947, Walter Lowe became editor of the
Greensburg Daily News;
Whereas, In 1964, Mr. Lowe expanded the area served by
the Cheer Fund to include all of Decatur County;
Whereas, Over the years, support for the Cheer Fund has
grown from a goal of $5,000 in 1974 to a goal of $45,000 in
2011;
Whereas, Because of the effort of dedicated volunteers,
each year the Greensburg Daily News Cheer Fund helps bring
smiles to the faces of hundreds of Decatur County's less
fortunate children and makes their holidays brighter; and
Whereas, Christmas is a time for the young and young at
heart to experience the happiness of life, and the Cheer Fund
helps them do this: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives thanks the administration and volunteer staff of the Greensburg Daily News Cheer Fund for their unselfish dedication to those less fortunate in helping them to experience joy and love at Christmas.
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit copies of this resolution to the editor of the Greensburg Daily News.
