        A HOUSE RESOLUTION to increase the awareness of juvenile myositis.

    Whereas, Juvenile myositis (JM) is an autoimmune disease affecting approximately 5,000 children in the United States;

    Whereas, In patients with JM, the body's immune system attacks the muscle and skin;

    Whereas, Children between the ages of five and 15 are the primary patients of JM, with the average age of onset being between the ages of six and seven years old;

    Whereas, Approximately 1,000 children are diagnosed each year, and girls are twice as likely to be affected by JM;

    Whereas, Juvenile myositis is characterized by a combination of skin rashes, muscle weakness, fatigue, fever, and joint pain that varies in severity;

    Whereas, Children who develop juvenile myositis often have a family history of other autoimmune diseases, such as thyroid disorder, type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or Crohn's disease;

    Whereas, Although medications can help ease the symptoms of juvenile myositis, there is no known cure;

    Whereas, Juvenile myositis is a life changing disease whose symptoms range from minor annoyance to chronic pain, inability to walk, bodily disfigurement, and even death;

    Whereas, Although there is no cure, the lives of people with juvenile myositis have continued to improve with advances in early diagnosis and aggressive treatment; and

    Whereas, Through increased awareness, the prognosis for juvenile myositis patients can continue to improve and a cure may become a reality: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

    SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives, through this resolution, hopes to increase the awareness of juvenile myositis and improve the chances of finding a cure for this debilitating disease.
