Synopsis: Hidden compartments in vehicles. Prohibits a person from: (1) owning or operating a vehicle equipped with a hidden compartment if the person has the intent to conceal a controlled substance within the hidden compartment; or (2) constructing or installing a hidden compartment in a motor vehicle if the person has the intent to facilitate the concealment of a controlled substance.

    A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning criminal law and procedure.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SOURCE: IC 9-19-22; (12)IN0202.1.1. -->     SECTION 1. IC 9-19-22 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE AS A NEW CHAPTER TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2012]:
     Chapter 22. Hidden Compartments
    Sec. 1. As used in this chapter, "hidden compartment" has the meaning set forth in IC 35-41-1-13.5.
    Sec. 2. A person who:
        (1) with the intent to conceal an unlawful controlled substance in the hidden compartment, owns or operates a motor vehicle knowing that the motor vehicle contains a hidden compartment; or
        (2) with the intent to facilitate the concealment of an unlawful controlled substance, knowingly or intentionally:
            (A) constructs a hidden compartment for use in a motor vehicle; or
            (B) installs a hidden compartment in a motor vehicle;
commits unlawful activity concerning a vehicle with a hidden

compartment, a Class C misdemeanor.

        (1) designed to conceal the enclosure and any contents of the enclosure; and
        (2) installed in the motor vehicle after the original manufacture of the motor vehicle.
