A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the 175th
Anniversary of the City of Carmel
.
Whereas, Carmel was founded on April 13, 1837 by Quaker
Pioneers under the name Bethlehem. The name was later
changed to Carmel in 1846 when a post office was approved
for the community;
Whereas, When Carmel incorporated in 1874 it had an
estimated population of 150. That number has since risen to
79,191 as of the last census;
Whereas, In 1924, one of the first traffic signals in the
United States was installed at the intersection of Main Street
and Range Line Road. The traffic signal was the first in
Indiana, an invention of local resident Leslie Haines;
Whereas, In 2000, Carmel further revolutionized the flow
of traffic by introducing the widespread use of roundabouts,
which received the Climate Protection Award by the U.S.
Conference of Mayors. Boasting over 80 roundabouts, Carmel
has more roundabouts than any other state, and is now known
as the unofficial roundabout capital of the country;
Whereas, Carmel High School opened in 1887 with a mere 40 students. Carmel is now the second largest school in the state with a population of 4,400 students. Carmel High School
won their 100th IHSAA championship in 2011, making them the
winningest school in the state of Indiana; and
Whereas, Carmel has grown from its humble beginnings to
become the 8th largest city in Indiana, one of the best places to
live according to CNN Money Magazine, and one of the "Best
Cities to Relocate to in America" according to CNBC. With
their dedication to the community, the school systems, and
environmental initiatives, Carmel certainly earns the title of
one of the best places to live: Therefore,
SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly congratulates Carmel on their 175th anniversary.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Jim Brainard, Carmel Mayor; and the Carmel City Council .
