RESOLUTION No. _____
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing Judge Peter
Nemeth upon his retirement.
Whereas, Judge Peter Nemeth retired on December 31,
2012, after over 20 years of public service in the South Bend
area;
Whereas, Judge Nemeth is a South Bend native, who
attended St. Patrick's Grade School and graduated from St.
Joseph's High School;
Whereas, After leaving South Bend to attend the
University of Arizona and Columbia Law School, Judge
Nemeth returned home and began his life in the public
sector, which included contributions to all three branches of
government;
Whereas, Judge Nemeth was elected to the South Bend
City Council, where he served for four years - three of which
were as Council President;
Whereas, At the age of 33, Judge Nemeth was elected mayor of South Bend, serving faithfully for one term. During his term, he was instrumental in the development and construction of Century Center, the development of the 1st Source Bank/Marriott Hotel building, and the expansion and upgrading of the Potawatomi Zoo;
Whereas, Judge Nemeth's greatest contributions to Indiana came while serving as Judge of the St. Joseph Probate Court, a position he was appointed to in 1993;
Whereas, Judge Nemeth's legacy will be the St. Joseph
County Juvenile Justice Center of which he oversaw the
design, construction, and opening. The Center is a $20
million 144,000 square foot facility which houses four
courtrooms, a detention center, the juvenile probation
department, and other county offices;
Whereas, In his retirement from the bench, Judge Nemeth
hopes to spend more time with his wife, Carol, and their five
children and thirteen grandchildren; and
Whereas, Judge Peter Nemeth has had an outstanding
career in public service. We wish him well in the next phase
of his life: Therefore,
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes
Judge Peter Nemeth for his outstanding career in public service.
SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed to
transmit a copy of this Resolution to Judge Peter J. Nemeth.
