DIGEST OF INTRODUCED RESOLUTION

A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Indiana Department of Transportation to name the bridge over the Blue River in Columbia City on State Road 9 between Hanna Street and West Spencer Street the "Senator Gary P. Dillon Bridge".

SENATE RESOLUTION No. 6

MADAM PRESIDENT:

I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:

Whereas, Senator Gary P. Dillon began his career in the Indiana General Assembly in 1998 when he was elected to serve in the House of Representatives;

Whereas, Senator Dillon served two terms in the House of Representatives, where he was the ranking minority member on both the Education Committee and the Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development Committee;

Whereas, The National Republican Legislators Association named Senator Dillon the Republican Freshman Legislator of the Year in 2000;

Whereas, In 2002, Senator Dillon was elected to the Indiana Senate to represent Senate District 17;

Whereas, Throughout his 12-year tenure in the Indiana General Assembly, Senator Dillon has been a champion for the people of the state of Indiana and has honestly and faithfully served his constituency;

Whereas, Senator Dillon has served as a member on

numerous legislative standing committees and subcommittees, including the Education and Career Development Committee, Elections and Redistricting Subcommittee, Energy and Environmental Affairs Committee, Natural Resources Committee, Pensions and Labor Committee, and Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee;

Whereas, In addition, Senator Dillon has enjoyed the role of ranking member for the Appropriations Committee and for the Health and Provider Services Committee and served as chair of the Ethics Committee and the Public Health Subcommittee;

Whereas, Senator Dillon was also appointed to the position of Assistant Majority Caucus Chair;

Whereas, Senator Dillon's dedication to the people of the state of Indiana extends beyond the Indiana Senate;

Whereas, From 1965 to 1971, Senator Dillon served in the Indiana Air National Guard;

Whereas, In 1968, while in the Indiana Air National Guard, he received his bachelor of arts degree from Wabash College;

Whereas, Upon graduation, Senator Dillon went on to medical school at Indiana University, where he won the Otis R. Bowen Leadership Award and an Academic Achievement Award;

Whereas, After graduating and becoming board certified in 1977, Senator Dillon spent nearly 30 years in private practice in Fort Wayne, Indiana;

Whereas, Senator Dillon's career in medicine includes various leadership roles, such as Medical Director of Whitley County Hospice, President of Whitley County Hospital's medical staff, and member of the leadership committee at Parkview Medical System in Fort Wayne, Indiana;

Whereas, Senator Dillon pursued a Dermatopathology

Fellowship from 2008 to 2009, becoming board certified in dermatopathology in 2009;

Whereas, Senator Dillon has been a part-time clinical faculty member at the Indiana University Dermatopathology Department for several years and currently works part time in Dermatopathology at Clarion and Mid-America Pathology Services;

Whereas, In addition to his work in the legislature, Senator Dillon has served the community of Whitley County in a myriad of ways. He acted as President and board member of the Whitley County Board of Health and board member of the Whitley County Consolidated School Board. He is also a founding board member of Whitley County Youth for Christ and served on the Whitley County YMCA Board and Funding Committee;

Whereas, Senator Dillon's family includes his wife, Judith Ann, four adult children, and five grandchildren; and

Whereas, Senator Gary P. Dillon is admired and respected by everyone in the Indiana Senate: Therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the

General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate urges the Indiana Department of Transportation to name the bridge over the Blue River in Columbia City on State Road 9 between Hanna Street and West Spencer Street the "Senator Gary P. Dillon Bridge" in honor of Senator Dillon's dedicated service to the Indiana Senate.
SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted by the Secretary of the Senate to the commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
