A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

"The revised school code,"

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1164c.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 1164c. (1) The department may develop or adopt, and make available to public schools, a model program of instruction on cursive as a type of penmanship. The department is strongly encouraged to develop or adopt, and make available to public schools, a list of model programs for the instruction described in this subsection by not later than August 1, 2024.

(2) If the list of model programs of instruction described in subsection (1) is developed or adopted by the department, the board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy is strongly encouraged to incorporate at least 1 of the model programs of instruction in the curriculum offered by schools operated by the board or board of directors. If the list of model programs of instruction described in subsection (1) is developed or adopted by the department before the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the board of a school district or intermediate school district or board of directors of a public school academy is strongly encouraged to incorporate at least 1 of the model programs of instruction in the curriculum offered by schools operated by the board or board of directors beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.
