A bill to amend 1949 PA 300, entitled
"Michigan vehicle code,"
(MCL 257.1 to 257.923) by adding section 617b.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 617b. A police officer who responds to a vehicle accident
that resulted in serious impairment of a body function or death of
an individual shall immediately do all of the following:
(a) Notify the next of kin of the individuals who were injured
or died as a result of the accident, if the law enforcement officer
is able to determine the name and contact information for the next
of kin.
(b) Inform the next of kin described in subdivision (a) that
he or she should notify the injured or deceased individual's
insurance company of the fact that its insured was involved in a
personal injury or fatal accident.
(c) Not more than 30 days after the accident, notify the
insurance company of all the individuals involved in the accident
that the accident involved its insured.
