Rep. Rick Jones offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 131.
A resolution to call upon the Auditor General to identify and analyze all profits generated by the Michigan State Police Headquarters project and to report the findings to the House of Representatives.
Whereas, Transparency in government is vital to public trust, especially in the decisions that are made with regard to the spending of tax dollars. The need for full accountability becomes even more obvious at times when financial pressures result in cuts to critical services. As is the case in Michigan right now, every single decision made in Lansing is magnified when viewed through the lens of massive budgetary shortfalls; and
Whereas, The ongoing construction of the Michigan State Police Headquarters project in downtown Lansing has raised a significant public outcry, especially when the full ramifications of the recent layoff of 100 newly trained state troopers are considered; and
Whereas, The many inexplicable aspects of the Michigan State Police Headquarters project, including its origins, the premature abandonment of its current facilities, the unusual locale of the new building in light of security concerns, and longstanding opposition to the new building from some within the department make it essential that a thorough examination of finances be conducted as soon as possible. The public has every right to full disclosure; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we call upon the Auditor General to identify and analyze all profits generated by the Michigan State Police Headquarters project and to report the findings to the House of Representatives by August 18, 2009; and be it further
Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the office of the Auditor General.
