Rep. Brown offered the following resolution:
House Resolution No. 149.
A resolution to declare October 2011 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, One in four women and one in thirteen men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime; and
Whereas, The ramifications of domestic violence are staggering; and
Whereas, Exposure to domestic violence puts our young men and women in danger of long-term physical, psychological, and emotional harm; and
Whereas, Young women are among the most vulnerable, suffering the highest rates of intimate partner violence; and
Whereas, Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children as adults; and
Whereas, Children who experience domestic violence are at a higher risk for failure in school, emotional disorders, and substance abuse, and are more likely to perpetuate the cycle of violence themselves later in life; and
Whereas, The effects of current domestic violence can be felt in the present as well as into the future and all citizens should be aware of the problems of domestic violence; and
Whereas, Everyone can play an active role in preventing and ending domestic violence by stepping up to stop violence when they see it; and
Whereas, During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we recommit to making sure that no one suffers and to assist those who need help in reaching a safer tomorrow; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare October 2011 Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
