House Resolution No. 271.
A resolution to declare November 2013 as Long-Term Care Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
Whereas, The U.S. Census Bureau has projected that the population of Michigan residents age 65 and older will increase by nearly 70 percent to more than 2 million in 2030; and
Whereas, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has reported that 70 percent of people over the age of 65 will need long-term care services at some point, with more than 40 percent of this group requiring nursing home care and another 30 percent requiring in-home assistance; and
Whereas, In 2012, long-term care insurers paid $6.6 billion in claim payments to some 264,000 individuals and by 2032 insurers are expected to pay $34 billion-a-year in benefits which is a 415 percent increase; and
Whereas, The average cost for a semi-private room in a nursing facility costs is nearly $75,000 a year and costs associated with long-term care needs are expected to continue to increase; and
Whereas, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has reported less than 33 percent of adults over the age of 50 have begun saving for their long-term care needs; and
Whereas, Michigan citizens should recognize this critical situation and with the assistance and cooperation of state and federal government and businesses of all sizes, begin to take the appropriate steps to ensure that individuals and their families' long-term care needs can be met; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body declare November 2013 as Long-Term Care Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
