SENATE BILL No. 99

 

 

February 2, 2017, Introduced by Senators CONYERS, GREGORY, HERTEL, HORN, KNEZEK, SCHUITMAKER, HOPGOOD, YOUNG, SCHMIDT, NOFS, HANSEN and BIEDA and referred to the Committee on Education.

 

 

 

     A bill to amend 2008 PA 315, entitled

 

"Farm-to-school procurement act,"

 

by amending section 2 (MCL 388.842) and by adding section 3a.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 2. As used in this act:

 

     (a) "Farm product" means that term as defined in section 2 of

 

the Michigan right to farm act, 1981 PA 93, MCL 286.472.

 

     (b) "MDA" means the Michigan department of agriculture and

 

rural development.

 

     (c) "MDE" means the Michigan department of education.

 

     Sec. 3a. (1) The MDE shall, with input from the MDA, develop

 

and make available to elementary and secondary schools a model

 

field trip program that provides students with hands-on learning

experiences on local farms. A model field trip program developed

 

under this section must include instruction about the food

 

transportation network.

 

     (2) The governing body of each elementary and secondary school

 

is encouraged to adopt and implement the model field trip program

 

developed under subsection (1).

 

     Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect 90 days

 

after the date it is enacted into law.
