SENATE BILL NO. 298

A bill to amend 2008 PA 525, entitled

"Fostering futures scholarship trust fund act,"

by amending section 7b (MCL 722.1027b), as added by 2014 PA 530.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 7b. A foster care student is eligible for a fostering futures scholarship if all of the following apply:

(a) Due to child abuse or child neglect, the foster care student was in foster care after his or her thirteenth birthday.

(b) The foster care student is attending an either of the following:

(i) An institution of higher education in this state as determined by the department.

(ii) A trade school or technical school in this state. As used in this subparagraph, "trade school" or "technical school" means a postsecondary institution that is designed to give a student the technical skills to prepare him or her for a specific occupation which institution qualifies as an eligible education institution as that term is defined in section 529(e)(5) of the internal revenue code, 26 USC 529, and the institution's programs lead to positive employment and earnings outcomes for its graduates, as determined by the department.

(c) The foster care student has an unmet financial education need.

(d) The foster care student has completed the application and provided the department with the required documentation.

(e) The foster care student maintains satisfactory academic progress as determined by the department.
