A bill to amend 1956 PA 218, entitled
"The insurance code of 1956,"
(MCL 500.100 to 500.8302) by adding section 624a.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec. 624a. (1) An insurer that delivers, issues for delivery,
or renews pet insurance in this state shall disclose all of the
following to the insured:
(a) Limitations on coverage, including, but not limited to,
coverage on preexisting conditions, hereditary disorders, and
elective conditions.
(b) Waiting periods.
(c) Deductibles.
(2) The director shall promulgate rules and regulations to
effectuate this section under section 210.
(3) As used in this section:
(a) "Hereditary disorder" means an abnormality that is
genetically transmitted from parent to offspring and may cause
illness or disease.
(b) "Pet insurance" means a type of miscellaneous insurance as
described in section 624 that provides coverage for veterinary
expenses.
(c) "Preexisting condition" means a condition for which a
veterinarian provided medical advice, the pet received treatment,
or the pet displayed signs or symptoms consistent with the stated
condition before the effective date of a pet insurance policy or
during a waiting period.
(d) "Veterinarian" means that term as defined in section 18805
of the public health code, 1978 PA 368, MCL 333.18805.
(e) "Veterinary expenses" means the costs associated with
medical advice, diagnosis, care, or treatment provided by a
veterinarian, including, but not limited to, the cost of drugs
prescribed by the veterinarian.
