A bill to amend 1956 PA 218, entitled
"The insurance code of 1956,"
by amending section 3406r (MCL 500.3406r), as added by 2004 PA 375.
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:
Sec.
3406r. (1) As used in this section:
, "nurse
(a) "Certified professional midwife" means an individual who
has been credentialed as a certified professional midwife by the
North American registry of midwives.
(b) "Nurse midwife" means an individual licensed as a
registered professional nurse under article 15 of the public health
code, 1978 PA 368, MCL 333.16101 to 333.18838, who has been issued
a specialty certification in the practice of nurse midwifery by the
Michigan board of nursing under section 17210 of the public health
code, 1978 PA 368, MCL 333.17210.

Effective March 1, 2005, a A
health maintenance
organization contract and an expense-incurred hospital, medical, or
surgical policy or certificate that provides coverage for
obstetrical and gynecological services shall include coverage for
obstetrical and gynecological services whether performed by a
physician
or a nurse midwife acting within the scope of his or her
license, or
specialty certification, or shall do 1 or national
certification, including, but not limited to, both of the
following:
(a)
Offer to provide coverage Coverage
for obstetrical and
gynecological services whether performed by a physician or a nurse
midwife acting within the scope of his or her license or specialty
certification.
(b)
Offer to provide coverage Coverage
for all maternity
services and gynecological services rendered during pre- and post-
natal
care and delivery whether performed by a physician, or a
nurse midwife, or a certified professional midwife acting within
the
scope of his or her license, or specialty certification, or
national certification. Coverage under this subdivision applies
regardless of whether delivery occurred in a hospital, in a birth
center, or at home.
Enacting section 1. This amendatory act takes effect March 1,
2011.
