1.1A Senate concurrent resolution
1.2celebrating the service and leadership of Marv Johnson upon his retirement as Mayor
1.3of Independence, Minnesota.
1.4WHEREAS, those civic-minded individuals who work tirelessly in their communities perform
1.5an important service deserving of special legislative recognition; and
1.6WHEREAS, Marv Johnson was first elected mayor of the city of Independence in November
1.7of 1979; and
1.8WHEREAS, after more than four decades, Marv will complete his public service as mayor
1.9upon the swearing in of his successor on January 7, 2025; and
1.10WHEREAS, Marv, who is 89 years old, served as Mayor of Independence for 45 years and
1.11is the oldest and longest-serving mayor in modern Minnesota state history; and
1.12WHEREAS, in 2013, Marv earned the C.C. Ludwig Award, the highest honor of elected city
1.13officials given out by the League of Minnesota Cities. Recipients are chosen for their vision,
1.14statesmanship, and unwavering commitment to the public good; and
1.15WHEREAS, in addition to his service as mayor, Marv has served on countless other boards
1.16and associations, including the School District 287 board, the League of Minnesota Cities, and the
1.17Minnesota Mayors Association; and
1.18WHEREAS, Marv was born May 2, 1935, and is a graduate of Orono High School and the
1.19University of Minnesota; and
1.20WHEREAS, he served on the Independence City Planning Commission and was a city council
1.21member prior to becoming mayor; and
1.22WHEREAS, known as the "Farming Mayor of Independence," Marv balanced his civic duties
1.23with his farm work and also served on many agriculture-related boards and associations; NOW,
1.24THEREFORE,
2.1BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota, the House of Representatives
2.2concurring, that it honors Marv Johnson and his distinguished service to his community and
2.3showcases his outstanding accomplishments while in office.
2.4BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.5enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by his signature and those of the Senate Majority
2.6Leader, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Chief Clerk of the House of
2.7Representatives, and transmit it to Marv Johnson.
