1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring former crew members of the USS Duluth LPD-6 on the occasion of their
1.3first reunion.
1.4WHEREAS, the USS Duluth, the second vessel of that name, was named for the city of
1.5Duluth, which itself derives its name from Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, the explorer who
1.6raised the French flag at the westernmost point of Lake Superior in 1679; and
1.7WHEREAS, the keel of the Duluth was laid on December 18, 1963, and the vessel was
1.8launched on August 14, 1965, and commissioned on December 18, 1965; and
1.9WHEREAS, the USS Duluth served the country for 40 years, from its launch until its
1.10decommissioning on October 8, 2005; and
1.11WHEREAS, during its proud time of service, the USS Duluth received 14 separate
1.12campaign medals, many awarded multiple times; and
1.13WHEREAS, the symbols of the ship's insignia mark the close relationship between the
1.14ship and the city of Duluth: the single large star represents the Star of the North, symbol of the
1.15State of Minnesota, and the five-starred diagonal band replicates the center of the Great Seal
1.16of the City of Duluth; and
1.17WHEREAS, from September 19 through September 22, 2013, the first reunion of the
1.18former crew members of the USS Duluth will be held in the city of Duluth, hosted by the Suites
1.19Hotel in Canal Park; and
1.20NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota
1.21that it extends a warm welcome to the former crew members of the USS Duluth, thanks them
1.22for their service and dedication to our state, country, and the United States Navy, and expresses
2.1the hope that they and all in the city of Duluth who receive them and help them to celebrate will
2.2find meaning in this time of reunion.
2.3BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare
2.4an enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that
2.5of the Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the former
2.6crew members of the USS Duluth.
