1.1A Senate resolution
1.2recognizing May as Live More Screen Less Month.
1.3WHEREAS, the social, psychological, physical, and mental health repercussions stemming
1.4from misuse or overuse of electronic devices is outpacing the ability of parents, teachers, health
1.5care providers, and the legislature to ensure responsible use by those who are purchasing,
1.6administering, and producing electronic devices for young people; and
1.7WHEREAS, persuasive design and gamification of social media applications contribute to
1.8addiction-like behavior, which is of particular concern for the developing adolescent brain; and
1.9WHEREAS, instances of depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, obesity, and interrupted
1.10sleep patterns in Minnesota's youth are rising in conjunction with social media application and
1.11electronic gaming use; and
1.12WHEREAS, companies that manufacture and sell electronic devices utilize advertising and
1.13marketing strategies, including complex algorithms, that appeal directly to children and adolescents
1.14through social media applications and games; and
1.15WHEREAS, getting together with friends, meeting neighbors, having casual conversations
1.16with others, and serving in your community are healthy ways to reduce the overuse of digital devices
1.17and promote connection as a pathway toward well-being; and
1.18NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.19recognizes the month of May to be Live More Screen Less awareness, advocacy, and action month
1.20to promote and advocate for digital well-being and the balanced and intentional use of devices so
1.21that young Minnesotans can thrive in the digital age.
1.22BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Minnesota offers a diverse array of natural resources,
1.23parks, and recreation where individuals of all ages can take advantage of the beauty of our state
1.24while spending time away from electronic devices.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.2enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
2.3Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to LiveMore ScreenLess.
