1.1A Senate resolution
1.2congratulating Josephine Zehnle Terwey of Long Prairie, Minnesota, on her 100th
1.3birthday.
1.4WHEREAS, Josephine Zehnle Terwey was one of nine children born to John and Anna
1.5Zehnle on June 5, 1916, in Reynolds Township near Long Prairie, Minnesota; and
1.6WHEREAS, she graduated from Long Prairie High School, where she was a member of
1.7the Peppy Peppers Pep Squad, in 1933, and in 1934, she was crowned Miss Todd County and
1.8was awarded a cruise from New Orleans to New York City; and
1.9WHEREAS, she graduated from the College of St. Benedict with a major in Home
1.10Economics in 1939 and in the summers of 1938 and 1939, she worked in Harlem, New York, at
1.11the Blessed Martin de Porres Flat with Baroness Catherine de Hueck, founder of the Friendship
1.12House movement; and
1.13WHEREAS, in the summer of 1941, she graduated from the dietetics program at the
1.14Hahnemann Medical School and Hospital in Philadelphia, began her career as a dietitian at the
1.15Air Force Hospital at Mather Field near Sacramento, then transferred to the hospital at Fort
1.16Ord, California; and
1.17WHEREAS, she married Leander Terwey in 1943 in Reno, Nevada, then they were
1.18transferred to the state of Georgia, and after leaving the military, they moved to St. Cloud with
1.19their two young children; and
1.20WHEREAS, in the late 1940s, they moved to Jo's childhood home in Long Prairie,
1.21continued the farming operation begun by her parents, and had ten children in all: Joseph,
1.22William, Ann, Carl, Paul, Roger, Martha, Susan, Louise, and George; and
2.1WHEREAS, when her youngest child started kindergarten, Jo began her career as a social
2.2worker for Todd County, specializing in working with the elderly, which she did for 16 years,
2.3winning a number of awards along the way; and
2.4WHEREAS, Jo volunteered at her church and in the community for many years, traveled a
2.5lot, served on the Minnesota State Board on Aging, is an avid and expert quilter, and has exhibited
2.6her work at state and local quilt shows; and
2.7WHEREAS, on June 5, 2016, Josephine will be 100 years old; and
2.8NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
2.9congratulates Josephine Zehnle Terwey of Long Prairie, Minnesota, on her 100th birthday.
2.10BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
2.11enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the Chair
2.12of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Josephine Zehnle Terwey.
