1.1A Senate resolution
1.2honoring Eva Horstman for being named a National Merit Commended
1.3Student.
1.4WHEREAS, the National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for
1.5recognition and scholarships that began in 1955; and
1.6WHEREAS, high school students enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by
1.7taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which serves as an
1.8initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year; in late September, about 34,000
1.9of the approximately 50,000 high scorers receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of
1.10outstanding academic promise; and
1.11WHEREAS, Commended Students achieve candidacy for special scholarships sponsored
1.12by corporations and businesses; and
1.13WHEREAS, Eva Horstman, a student at Edina High School, was recently notified of her
1.14National Merit Commended status, a noteworthy honor deserving of legislative recognition; and
1.15NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.16congratulates Eva Horstman on being named a National Merit Commended Student.
1.17BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.18enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.19Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to Eva Horstman.
