1.1A Senate resolution
1.2celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Portland Prairie 4-H Club.
1.3WHEREAS, the Portland Prairie 4-H Club was established in 1923 and is the oldest 4-H
1.4club in Houston County; and
1.5WHEREAS, on December 12, 1923, W.D. Stegner, the Houston County Agent, met with
1.6students and spoke to them about the 4-H organization, its purpose, and the goals of 4-H club work;
1.7and
1.8WHEREAS, the original founding members included Anna Bunge, John Deters, Ruth Deters,
1.9Olga Holter, Orvin Holter, Myrtle Holter, Anna Meitrodt, Martin Meitrodt, and Lenora Roble. The
1.10founding members adopted the club constitution and chose the name Portland Prairie Boys and
1.11Girls Club; and
1.12WHEREAS, the next month they were joined by Elmer Thies, Marvin Wiegrefe, Laura
1.13Bunge, Helen Watson, and Mildred Wiegrefe. Gladys Lapham, a local teacher, was their adult
1.14leader. Today, there are third and fourth generation descendants of founding members in the Portland
1.15Prairie 4-H Club; and
1.16WHEREAS, the Portland Prairie 4-H Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary July 23, 2023,
1.17in Eitzen, Minnesota; and
1.18WHEREAS, the Portland Prairie 4-H Club motto is "Make the Best Better!"; and
1.19NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the State of Minnesota that it
1.20wishes the Portland Prairie 4-H Club continued success in the future and encourages them to continue
1.21to "Make the Best Better" for another 100 years.
1.22BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is directed to prepare an
1.23enrolled copy of this resolution, to be authenticated by the Secretary's signature and that of the
1.24Chair of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, and transmit it to the Portland Prairie
1.254-H Club.
