House Bill 1203
AN ACT TO REQUIRE CERTAIN TESTING AND BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR ALL APPLICANTS SEEKING EMPLOYMENT AS A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. (1) In addition to any other requirements provided by law, any person desiring to become a law enforcement officer shall comply with the following provisions as part of the application process for employment as a law enforcement officer:
(a) Mental health evaluation by a licensed psychologist;
(b) Criminal background check;
(c) A thorough investigation by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation into the character of the applicant; and
(d) Testing for alcohol, drug or substance abuse.
(2) Any applicant who does not satisfactorily complete the requirements of subsection (1) of this section shall not be eligible for employment as a law enforcement officer.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2013.
