AN ACT TO REQUIRE INSURERS TO NOTIFY THE COMMISSIONER OF INSURANCE IF A MOTOR VEHICLE LIABILITY POLICY LAPSES OR OTHERWISE BECOMES INEFFECTIVE; TO FURTHER REQUIRE THE INSURERS TO PROVIDE THE COMMISSIONER WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE MOTOR VEHICLE THAT IS NO LONGER COVERED BY LIABILITY INSURANCE; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI:
SECTION 1. An insurance company issuing motor vehicle liability insurance policies covering motor vehicles registered in the State of Mississippi shall notify the Commissioner of Insurance if a motor vehicle liability insurance policy issued by the company is canceled, terminated, withdrawn, allowed to lapse or otherwise made ineffective on any motor vehicle. An insurance company shall provide that notice within fifteen (15) days after the policy is canceled, terminated, withdrawn, allowed to lapse or otherwise made ineffective on a motor vehicle. In addition, the company shall provide the commissioner with a description of the motor vehicle that is no longer covered by liability insurance. The description of the motor vehicle shall include, but not be limited to, the make of the vehicle and the vehicle identification number.
SECTION 2. Section 1 of this act shall be codified as a new section in Chapter 15, Title 63, Mississippi Code of 1972.
SECTION 3. This act shall take effect and be in force from and after July 1, 2010.
