By: Representative Warren
House Concurrent Resolution 3
(As Adopted by House and Senate)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE COURAGEOUS LIFE AND EXTRAORDINARY LEGACY OF POSTHUMOUS KOREAN WAR MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT PRIVATE FIRST CLASS MACK A. JORDAN.
WHEREAS, a native of Collins, Mississippi, Private First Class Mack A. Jordan distinguished himself as a fearless soldier in Company K of the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division of the United States Army, when he nobly gave his life to protect his fellow soldiers; and
WHEREAS, born on December 8, 1928, in Collins, Mississippi, Private First Class Jordan was a mere 22 years old when he gave his life for the great United States of America, joining the ranks of an elect fraternity of soldiers who have been ever the more deserving of the Korean War Medal of Honor, which was awarded posthumously to Mack A. Jordan on January 8, 1953; and
WHEREAS, Private First Class Jordan was filled with nothing but heart and temerity, yet near Kumsong, Korea, on November 15, 1951, a hail of bullets and grenades robbed him of his life, but not before his gallantry and indomitable valor allowed him to save the lives of his fellow comrades; and
WHEREAS, as a squad leader of the Third Platoon, he was an integral participant in a night attack on key terrain against a fanatical hostile force when suddenly, the platoon's advance was ceased by intense small-arms and automatic weapons fire and a vicious barrage of hand grenades from enemy opposition; and
WHEREAS, Private First Class Jordan, who commanded his troops to withdraw and reorganize, in a selfless display of intrepidity, voluntarily stayed behind to afford them covering fire; and
WHEREAS, while crawling toward the opponent's machine gun emplacement, he catapulted three grenades toward the enemy and neutralized the gun before rushing the position, and delivering an injurious shower of fire, killing several of the enemy and forcing the remainder to retreat to new positions; and
WHEREAS, he courageously attempted to move forward to silence another machine gun, but before he could leave his position, the ruthless foe hurled explosives down the hill and the ensuing explosion severed not one, but both of his legs; and
WHEREAS, despite these horrific and eventual mortal wounds, he continued to dispense deadly fire onto enemy territory and held off the assailants until the platoon returned; and
WHEREAS, Private First Class Jordan's unflinching courage and gallant self-sacrifice reflect lasting glory upon himself and uphold the noble traditions of the infantry and the military service; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the Legislature to honor heroic Mississippians such as Private First Class Mack A. Jordan for remarkable dedication and self-sacrifice to the United States of America, the State of Mississippi and the people of Collins, who are eternally appreciative, for without Jordan, the freedom they know and love would not be possible:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the courageous life and extraordinary legacy of Private First Class Mack A. Jordan for posthumously receiving the Korean War Medal of Honor for his service and bravery to this great nation.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Private First Class Mack A. Jordan and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
