House Concurrent Resolution 49
(As Adopted by House and Senate)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMEMORATING THE LIFE, LEGACY AND SERVICE OF MR. JOHNNY LOUIS PERKINS AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HIS PASSING.
WHEREAS, "To everything there is a season, and time to every purpose under the Heaven," and as such, the grand architect of the universe, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul's destiny, has summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Mr. Johnny Louis Perkins, to eternal rest, as he has made life's final transition from earthly travailing to heavenly reward, rendering great sorrow and loss to his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, the City of Detroit lost a wonderful friend, community leader and veteran educator on Sunday, April 6, 2014, with the passing of Mississippi native son, Mr. Johnny Louis Perkins, who was born in Leflore County to his late parents, S.C. Perkins, Sr., and Doshua Mae Fisher Perkins on July 6, 1949; and
WHEREAS, a 1970 graduate of Amanda Elzy High School, Mr. Perkins pursued his collegiate matriculation at Mississippi Valley State University, where he earned his baccalaureate degree, before relocating to Detroit, Michigan, with family members who had previously made the northern migration; and
WHEREAS, equipped with the values instilled in him by his parents and the knowledge acquired during his primary, secondary and collegiate educational enhancement, Mr. Perkins reinvested the energy and talents poured into him as an impressionable youth and responsible adult into the lives of the youth of Detroit as a highly revered educator in the Detroit Public School System for a number of years until a decline in health inhibited his ability to teach on a regular full-time basis; and
WHEREAS, having been introduced to Christ in the religious setting of his home environment, Mr. Perkins received his calling to declare the Gospel of Jesus Christ early in life, and at age ten, he joined Providence M.B. Church where he attended Sunday School, B.T.U. (Baptist Training Union), and served on the Usher Board for many years, and continued to evidence a great love and loyalty to the gospel even after his move north; and
WHEREAS, as fate would lend itself to building upon the blueprint divinely designed for the pattern of his life by the great deity, Mr. Perkins's love, chivalry and affection pierced the heart of the former Mary Wade, and the duo became bone of one another's bone and flesh of one another's flesh after exchanging the nuptials of holy matrimony on May 5, 1972; and
WHEREAS, though he has traversed the river of life to reunite with those who answered God's summons to life eternal and now beckon his arrival to the celestial shores of Heaven's grandeur, including his parents, the legacy of Mr. Perkins' memory will continue to refresh the hearts and fond memories of his beloved survivors, his grandmother, Lena Darby; two children, Neda Levone Perkins Hilliard and LaShundra Stewart; siblings, Reverend S.C. Perkins, Jr., Earnestine Perkins Purnell, Attorney and State Representative Willie James Perkins, Sr., Reverend Dr. Issac Perkins, Sr., Christine Perkins Stevenson, Charlie Perkins and Jonathan Perkins; six grandchildren, Khadijah, Abdullah, Z'Carias, Zion, Z'Khyah and Madison; a host of other relatives and friends; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the selflessness and benevolence of such a giant individual of esteemed caliber as Mr. Perkins, whose life's purpose was fulfilled in loving his family and positively transforming the lives of countless students of the Detroit Public School System:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life, legacy and service of Mr. Johnny Louis Perkins, and express deepest sympathy to our friend and colleague, the Honorable Willie J. Perkins, Sr., and to the family and friends of the late Mr. Johnny Louis Perkins upon his passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mr. Johnny Louis Perkins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
