A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ATHLETICISM AND SPIRIT OF SPORTSMANSHIP OF BRANDON, MISSISSIPPI NATIVE, MS. TAYLOR BEVERLY, AND CONGRATULATING HER UPON THE ICONIC ACCOMPLISHMENT OF BREAKING THE NCAA DIVISION II CAREER SCORING RECORD FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MONTEVALLO FALCONS WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM.

WHEREAS, March 1, 2014, will go down in history for the University of Montevallo junior basketball sensation and Brandon, Mississippi native, Ms. Taylor Beverly, who broke the Falcons' career scoring record in the Division II era by one point in the team's season finale against Young Harris College establishing the new division's new scoring record of 1,353 points; and

WHEREAS, having already broken her own record for single-season points in Montevallo's Division II era, Beverly started the game just 21 points away from breaking the career record, an impressive feat on its own, but becomes even more remarkable given the fact that Beverly is just a junior; and

WHEREAS, scoring 10 points in the first half, Beverly needed 12 points in the second half to break the record, and as she continued to lead the team in scoring, she scored exactly 12 points in the final half and broke the record on a layup with just 1:16 remaining in the game, ending the night with 22 points and 14 rebounding; and

WHEREAS, concluding the season as the second leading scorer in the Peach Belt Conference and the conference's leading rebounder, Taylor, a kinesiology major, has enjoyed a successful run on the hardwood since making her grand appearance as a freshman starter in the 2011-2012 season; and

WHEREAS, Taylor embarked upon her journey of basketball stardom as a preparatory player at Northwest Rankin High School where her skill was honed to near perfection, and which began the litany of honors, awards and recognitions, including:  being ranked the No. 9 recruit out of Mississippi by FILA; averaged 19.4 points, 8.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game; named First Team All-State as a senior and was named the MVP of the State Championship game; named to the Mississippi All-District team following the 2008-2009 season; named the 2010 District MVP and the Rankin County Tournament MVP; participated in the 2010 Mississippi All-Star Game; named a Top Performer by The Clarion Ledger five times; and named The Clarion Ledger Metro Area Athlete of the Week in 2010 and Player of the Year in 2011; and

WHEREAS, her collegiate honors include:  having appeared in 27 games, including 14 starts; named the Falcons' Most Valuable Player; led the team in scoring with an average of 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for the 2011-2012 season; named First Team All-Peach Belt Conference; named Second Team Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region; served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee; led the Falcons with an average of 17.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and shooting 49.9 percent from the floor; scored a career-high 27 points against USC Aiken; grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds against Francis Marion; and finished with a career-high four blocked shots against Georgia College; and

WHEREAS, this astonishing feat of sheer athletic prowess, discipline and fortitude is testament to the greatness that lies within each of our state's youth coupled with the proper support, training and individual perseverance to excel in every endeavor undertaken as evidenced by Ms. Beverly; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence in Mississippi's crown jewels of success and prosperity, such as Taylor whose accomplishments bestow great pride and esteem upon her family, community and the entire state:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the athleticism and spirit of sportsmanship of Brandon, Mississippi native, Taylor Beverly, congratulate her upon the iconic accomplishment of breaking the NCAA Division II career scoring record for the University of Montevallo Falcons Women's Basketball Team, and extend sincere wishes for continued academic and athletic success in all her future endeavors.
