A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MR. TAVEZE CALHOUN UPON RECEIVING THE DISTINCT HONOR OF BEING NAMED A WILLIAM V. CAMPBELL TROPHY FINALIST.

     WHEREAS, on December 8, 2015, Mr. Taveze Calhoun was honored by the National Football Foundation in New York City as one of 12 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, also known as the "Academic Heisman Trophy"; and

     WHEREAS, the 12 finalists were chosen from a well-vetted pool of 135 total candidates, each of whom represented the best senior student athlete on their respective teams, playing in their final year of eligibility and either starting for their team or making significant contributions for their team; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Calhoun's journey to New York City began in Morton, Mississippi, his hometown, where he played football for the Morton High School Panthers, the program that began to develop the skill of a talented football player on Friday nights, while excelling in the classroom where he acquired a passion for academics, especially for history classes; and

     WHEREAS, after high school Mr. Calhoun chose to attend Mississippi State University to further quench his thirst for academics and to play football in the Southeastern Conference; and

     WHEREAS, over the course of his college football career, Mr. Calhoun continued to prove his unrivaled commitment to excellence, as evidenced by the hours spent practicing, studying game film and meeting with positional coaches, an approach that undoubtedly proved to be a formula for success while attending Mississippi State, where he played in 45 games, started 31 games and was chosen to lead the team as a 2015 team captain, a fitting recognition for his many years of hard work and leadership; and

     WHEREAS, prior to being selected as a William V. Campbell Trophy Finalist, Mr. Calhoun has earned distinction as a Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll member three times, additionally, he serves his community and the State of Mississippi by volunteering with the Salvation Army, the Starkville Manor Nursing Home, the Oktibbeha County Humane Society, Deuce McAllister's Catch 22 Foundation and aided in efforts to provide tornado relief for the people of Louisville, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to playing football and serving his community, Mr. Calhoun also continued his passion for education, earning his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies, and immediately began and is currently working toward a graduate degree in workforce leadership while planning for his future after the National Football League; and

     WHEREAS, as the fourth Mississippi State University football player to be selected as a National Football Foundation National Scholar-Athlete in the program's history, Mr. Calhoun will receive a post-graduate scholarship for $18,000.00 and the incalculable honor of representing his school in receiving one of the highest honors a student athlete can aspire for; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to share in the enthusiasm of citizens of this state as they represent Mississippi through outstanding achievements and honors, such as Mr. Calhoun, who has brought honor to his university, his hometown and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mr. Taveze Calhoun upon being named a 2015 William V. Campbell Trophy Finalist, and extend best wishes for success in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Taveze Calhoun, to Mississippi State University Director of Athletics Mr. Scott Strickland and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
