A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2016-2017 HINDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER TEAM AND HEAD COACH DOUG WILLIAMS UPON WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI ASSOCIATION OF COMMUNITY AND JUNIOR COLLEGES STATE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE NATIONAL JUNIOR ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION REGION 23 CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Hinds Community College Men's Soccer Team finished the 2016-2017 season with their tenth state title in 18 years when they reigned victorious as the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Soccer Champions and the National Junior Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 23 Champions; and

     WHEREAS, playing with clear eyes, full hearts and unimaginable amounts of strength, the Hinds men outlasted, outplayed and ultimately overpowered Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in a 2-0 win at the MACJC State Soccer Championship; and

     WHEREAS, as many veterans of the game have said, "Defense wins championships," this age-old saying defined the immaculate strategy and skill of the Hinds defense, whose grit, fortitude and determination erected a stone wall that helped secure each of the playoff wins as well as the championship victory, while the dedication and athletic prowess of the offensive players helped them become game changers during the championship match, ensuring the revered title crown returned to the Hinds Community College trophy case; and

     WHEREAS, the NJCAA All-Americans from Hinds Community College Men's Soccer Team include, Chris Rash in 2003 and 2004, Matt Fulton in 2004 and Dillon Walker in 2010, and the NJCAA All-Region Team members include Wanner Paiz, Terry Rogers and Patrick Ross from the 2016-2017 team, and Hinds has had 47 total players in 18 years make the NJCAA All-Region Teams; and

     WHEREAS, the MACJC All-State Team members are Paxton Bounds, JP Burke, Victor Hugo and Christian Williams, all from the 2016-2017 team, and 68 players from Hinds have made the All-State Teams in the last 18 years, and the MACJC All-Star Game players include 2016-2017 team members Sess Means, Wanner Paiz, Patrick Ross and BJ Sanders, and Hinds has had 13 players selected to play in the MACJC All-Star Game in 3 years since its beginning; and

     WHEREAS, the 2016-2017 Hinds Community College Men's Soccer Team statistics were impressive, and there were outstanding headers, strikes, penalty kicks and goals by individual players, but the key to this team's consistent success has been the constant team atmosphere and year-round hard work; and

     WHEREAS, the Hinds Community College Men's Soccer Team is comprised of very talented and distinguished young men, which ultimately catapulted them to winning their championship status, including:  Hill Belding, Tanner Berry, Paxton Bounds, JP Burke, Hunter Cagle, Victor Freitas, Spencer Lucas, Sess Means, Felipe Meireles, Victor Munagorri, Caleb Pace, Wanner Paiz, Josh Parron, Cesar Peterson, Evan Ratcliff, Terry Rogers, Patrick Ross, BJ Sanders, Alex Sterling, Dalton Sullivan, Josh Vidana, Christian Williams and Ethan Zadrozny; and

     WHEREAS, the Hinds team has been superbly coached and inspired by the eighth winningest active NJCAA soccer coach in the nation, Head Coach Doug Williams, who has broadened the teams' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution, and he was named the MACJC Coach of the Year for 2016 for the tenth time, previously named in 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2015, and his record for the 2016-2017 season is 10-4-1 and his overall 17-year career record is 222 wins, 80 losses and 19 ties; and 

     WHEREAS, Coach Williams continues to build upon the legacy of superior play and true sportsmanship forged by the tenacious and undaunted spirit of each team member, as evidenced in his ability to produce high caliber players and plays and the team's successful season; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the superb accomplishments of Mississippi student-athletes, especially those such as the Hinds Community College Men's Soccer Team, whose excellence on the field and in the classroom with a collective GPA of 3.27, bring honor to their school, the Hinds County community and the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2016-2017 Hinds Community College Men's Soccer Team and Head Coach Doug Williams upon winning the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State Soccer Championship and the National Junior Athletic Association Region 23 Championship and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Doug Williams and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
