House Resolution 108

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS, COMMENDING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MRS. CATHERINE FREEMAN KENT AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

WHEREAS, it is written in II Corinthians 4:17-18, "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen:  for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal," and as such, the immaculate author and finisher of our soul's destiny summoned the mortal presence of dearly beloved, Mrs. Catherine Freeman Kent, to rest eternally, on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, as she has made life's final transition from earthly travailing to heavenly reward, rendering great sorrow and loss to her family and friends; and

WHEREAS, the Raymond Community of Hinds County lost a wonderful friend with the passing of Mrs. Kent, the second oldest of eight children born to her late parents, Mr. Eddie and Mrs. Minnie Freeman, on March 7, 1946, and there is now a hush in our hearts as we come together to pay our respects to the memory of one who has been called to join that innumerable heavenly caravan; and

WHEREAS, a diligent worker, nurturer and provider, Mrs. Kent, who had the principle tenets of life and faith ingrained in her lineal fabric by her parents, received her early childhood education from Carver Middle School and accepted Christ at an early age at Belmont Missionary Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, fate would lend itself to being built in accordance with the blueprint divinely designed for the pattern of her life by the Great Deity and grand architect of our lives' destiny, when her heart was pierced by the love, chivalry and affection of her high school sweetheart, Clarence Kent, Jr., and the duo became bone of one another's bone and flesh of one another's flesh after exchanging the nuptials of holy matrimony on December 1, 1963, building a lifetime of memories with the addition of four children, with each of whom they shared the abundant blessings of love, honor and humility; and

WHEREAS, cognizant of the words recorded in I John 3:2 - "Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is," Mrs. Kent strove diligently to exemplify a Christ-like walk before her family, fulfilling the role as wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who was a community icon for her southern style cooking and delectable baked goods; and

WHEREAS, a God-fearing Christian before all other roles she assumed, a nurturing, protective and caring mother next, Mrs. Kent was the epitome of a woman of Proverbs 31:10 virtue who possessed an ambitious spirit akin to that of King David, as she was a woman who sought the very heart of God and demonstrated great faith and commitment to Jesus Christ through her diligent service, first, as a lifelong member of Belmont Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir for 41 years until health complications restricted her ability to do so, all of which confirm the recording of Romans 14:8, "If we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord"; and

WHEREAS, though she has traversed life's river to reunite in glorious fanfare with those loved ones who made life's transition to eternity before her, the legacy of Mrs. Kent's indelible imprint upon our lives will continue to refresh the hearts and fond memories of her beloved survivors:  her husband of 56 years, Mr. Clarence Kent, Jr.; four children, Charles Kent, Sr., Deborah Mack, Albert Kent, Sr., and Diana Kelly; stepson, Albert McGee; ten grandchildren, Mercedes, Charles Jr., Joshunda, Allison, Albert Jr., Alban, Jirvus, Regina, Allen and Jeremy; siblings, Bessie Banger, Eddie Freeman III, Shirley Ward, Ruby Percy, Lou Gene Freeman and Viereather Kent; aunt, Ernestine Young; brother-in-law, Jimmie Dale Kent; and a host of other relatives and friends; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the life of a genuine and selfless individual such as Mrs. Kent, whose life light illuminated the path of hope for all she encountered along this earthly sojourn:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commemorate the life and legacy of Mrs. Catherine Freeman Kent, to whose family we express sincere and deepest sympathy upon her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Catherine Freeman Kent and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
