A RESOLUTION COMMENDING GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL FOR WINNING THE STATE-LEVEL COMPETITION OF THE 2010 "WE THE PEOPLE: THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION" CIVIC EDUCATION COMPETITION AND EXPRESSING BEST WISHES FOR THEIR SUCCESS AT THE NATIONAL COMPETITION IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
WHEREAS, Gulfport High School won the state-level competition of the 2010 "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" civic education competition and will compete in the national competition in Washington, D.C., on April 24-25; and
WHEREAS, Gulfport High School's team traveled to Mississippi State University to be tested on their knowledge of the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights; and
WHEREAS, divided into six groups, the teams made four-minute presentations, followed by six minutes of questioning by a team of judges; and
WHEREAS, led by social studies teacher, DeAnna Roessling, the 29-member Gulfport team excelled over all other teams from the State of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Gulfport High School team is comprised of the following students: UNIT I: Ashley Smith, Katye Miller, Miriam Davis, Brandon Corner, Marshall Van Loon and Michelle Ladner; UNIT II: Claire Yoste, Ashley Rowland, K.T. Perkins, Kelsey Kitch and Maddie Costelli; UNIT III: Amber Thomas, Harlee Troutman, Marissa de los Santos and Jessi Ballard; UNIT IV: D'Asia Gholar, Shelbi Lewis, Gaberille McKinney, Shenice Davis and Shenesha McLemore; UNIT V: Samantha Treadaway, Sylvia Brown, Tyra Harrien, Madeline Barnes and Kadesh Wyche; and UNIT VI: Thomas Hardaway, James Brumbaugh, Kent Scipione, DeKarlos Evers and Drake Odom; and
WHEREAS, Susie Burroughs, the program's state coordinator and interim head of the MSU College of Education's curriculum, instruction and special education department, stated, "'We the People' is the premier academic competition of its kind for high school students. The 65 Mississippi students who took part this year logged in early morning, late night and weekend study sessions to reach the state finals. The judges, all members of the MSU faculty and administration, were impressed with their knowledge of the Constitution and their ability of applying its principles to contemporary issues."; and
WHEREAS, created in 1987 by an act of the Congress of the United States and funded by the United States Department of Education's Center for Civic Education, "We the People" is part of curriculums at elementary, middle and high schools in every state, and the program has involved more than 30 million students and 81,000 teachers over the years of its existence; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend excellence, especially when demonstrated by the youth of the State of Mississippi, who are its future:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Gulfport High School for winning the state-level competition of the 2010 "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" civic education competition and extend best wishes for continued success in the national competition in Washington, D.C.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to DeAnna Roessling, Susie Burroughs and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
