A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2010 RECIPIENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI FOUNDERS' DAY AWARDS.
WHEREAS, on March 30, 2010, several University of Southern Mississippi students were recognized as the top community leaders during the university's Founders' Day Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, the Most Outstanding Freshman Female award went to Mercedes Le, who is a speech-language pathology major from Tupelo, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Most Outstanding Freshman Male award went to Davontae Washington, who is a marketing major from New Augusta, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Best Female Citizen award went to Whitney Blakely, who is a computer science major from Shubuta, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Best Male Citizen award went to Bentley Anderson, who is a history and political science double major from Hattiesburg, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Leave It Better Than You Found It award went to Kelley Rooney for her leadership and hard work in leaving Southern Mississippi a better campus than she found it; and
WHEREAS, the Founders' Day Hall of Fame, included Sarah Ali, a biochemistry major from Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Zoe Beckham, an English major from Mandeville, Louisiana; Ken Busby, a molecular biology major from Mobile, Alabama; Samone Faulkner, a public relations major from Hattiesburg, Mississippi; Jennifer Lamb, an environmental biology major from Brandon, Mississippi; Stuart Lovinggood, an American Chemical Society certified chemistry major from Metairie, Louisiana; Elizabeth Maloy, an art major from Long Beach, Mississippi; Jayson Newell, a political science major from Ridgeland, Mississippi; and J.R. Robinson, an administration of justice major from Bolton, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, the Hall of Fame inductees for this year's program included a Southern Mississippi Homecoming Queen, and many members of the USM Student Government, including its president; and
WHEREAS, the Phi Kappa Phi Silver Bowl award went to Candice White from Meridian, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, upon graduation in May, Candice will pursue a master of arts degree in teaching at the University of Southern Mississippi, and will also begin teaching high school students because of her desire to mentor, teach and empower young adults; and
WHEREAS, the Judge R.J. Bishop Mississippian award winner is Crystal Woodard, the award was established in 1978 by Ms. Elna Bishop in loving memory of her father, Judge R.J. Bishop; and
WHEREAS, these students represent the best of America's youth, who are role models at the University of Southern Mississippi, and will be our future leaders of the Magnolia State giving their lives to the value and importance of leading in their communities; and
WHEREAS, the success of the State of Mississippi, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of these students, who use their considerable talents and resources to lead others:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the University of Southern Mississippi Founders' Day award winners and extend best wishes for continued success in all of their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the University of Southern Mississippi and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
