A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING GEORGE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, UPON ITS CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION ON MAY 8, 2010, AND EXPRESSING SINCERE WISHES FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS AND PROSPERITY IN THE FUTURE.

     WHEREAS, George County, Mississippi, was formed in 1910 and celebrates its Centennial Anniversary on May 8, 2010; and

     WHEREAS, named after Senator James Z. George, a noted lawyer, jurist, farmer, soldier and statesman, the county was created from the two northernmost townships of Jackson County and one and one-half townships of the southernmost part of Greene County; and

     WHEREAS, George County spans 483.6 square miles in the southeastern coastal area of the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, Lucedale, Mississippi, the county seat, was incorporated in 1901 and formed around a giant sawmill operated by the Luce family, who came to the area in the 1880s to harvest timber from a 20,000 acre tract of land; and

     WHEREAS, Governor Edmond Noel appointed David Clay Eubanks, Cornelius Ferdinand Ward, John Bruner Goff, Jett C. Dorsett and Wesley W. Broom as provisional supervisors for George County, and they began their duties on May 1, 1910; and

     WHEREAS, during their first year in office, the provisional county supervisors voted to issue bonds for the construction of a courthouse and jail on land donated to the county by I.H. Weaver; and

     WHEREAS, over the past 100 years, George County has continued to develop and prosper, as evidenced by a population growth from 6,599 in 1910, to an estimated population of 22,681 in 2009; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend such an accomplished county as George County, Mississippi, that is home to thousands of outstanding citizens and brings great pride to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend George County, Mississippi, upon its Centennial Anniversary celebration on May 8, 2010, and express sincere wishes for continued success and prosperity in the future.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Board of Supervisors of George County and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
