WHEREAS, Brookhaven Academy, Inc., is celebrating its 50th year anniversary, commemorating a rich heritage as an excellent educational institution; and

WHEREAS, in 1965, Southern Schools, Inc., the predecessor of Brookhaven Academy, was granted a charter by the State of Mississippi, enabling the school to begin operation immediately; and
WHEREAS, soon after the charter was given, a public meeting was held and there was a plea for funds so that the school could meet its initial expenses; and
WHEREAS, in 1969, with no assurance that the endeavor would be successful, but having a strong belief in the school and its purpose of providing a quality education in a Christian environment, ten men rose to the occasion and each donated $1,000 to help build a new private school, including: Tullius Brady, Julius T. Burt, Carroll D. Calhoun, Orville O. Culver, L. Rea Godbold, Scott F. Hailey, S.E. Moreton, Jr., and Charles Ralph Smith; and
WHEREAS, Brookhaven Academy, as the school would later be called, began classes with 108 seventh through twelfth graders on January 5, 1970, on the Whitworth College campus; and
WHEREAS, in the 1970-1971 school year, grades one through six were added, with classes taking place in the F.B. Moodie home across the street from the upper classmen; and
WHEREAS, after obtaining its charter on February 17, 1971, Brookhaven Academy, Inc., took over operation of the school from Southern Schools, Inc., who ended its operation of the school in June 1971; and
WHEREAS, Brookhaven Academy, Inc., has continued a tradition of providing a total education that includes the opportunity to develop academically, spiritually, socially, morally, emotionally and physically, and has thrived in its position as a leader in education and sports in Brookhaven and Lincoln County; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend outstanding schools in this state, such as Brookhaven Academy, Inc., whose tireless dedication to the youth of our state has brought honor and pride to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Brookhaven Academy, Inc., upon the occasion of the 50th anniversary of its founding and recognize its rich heritage as an excellent educational institution.
