House Resolution 145
(As Adopted by House)
A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING THE MISSISSIPPI PETRIFIED FOREST ON THE CELEBRATION OF ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY AS A NATURAL RESOURCE AND ATTRACTION.
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Petrified Forest, located in Flora, Mississippi, is the only petrified forest in the eastern United States; and
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Petrified Forest is believed to have been formed 36 million years ago when fir and maple logs washed down an ancient river channel to the current site where the logs later became petrified; and
WHEREAS, although the existence of this petrified forest has been known since the mid-1800s, it did not become recognized as a natural resource and attraction until shortly after R.J. "Bob" and Shirl Schabilion acquired the forest in 1962; and
WHEREAS, teaching the values that are to be found in conserving and preserving America's natural resources, Mr. and Mrs. Schabilion developed the petrified forest and generously opened it to the public; and
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Petrified Forest offers many opportunities to appreciate this outstanding natural resource, including a nature trail and trail guide at each point of interest, an earth science museum, a gem mining flume, a campground composed of 15 camp sites, a picnic area, a large covered pavilion and a gift shop; and
WHEREAS, declared a National Natural Landmark in October 1965, the Mississippi Petrified Forest is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a valuable natural resource and attraction in the Magnolia State; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend the efforts and contributions of those who value and protect Mississippi's beautiful natural resources, such as the Schabilion family and the staff at the Mississippi Petrified Forest:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Mississippi Petrified Forest upon its 50th anniversary of being established as a state natural resource for the enjoyment of the public, and extend best wishes for its continued success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Petrified Forest and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
