A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF NITA MICHELLE CARTER AND COMMENDING HER UPON BEING NAMED RECIPIENT OF THE SOJOURNER TRUTH FOUNDER'S AWARD BY THE MISSISSIPPI WORKERS CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS.

WHEREAS, Nita Michelle Carter is a young woman who overcame tremendous obstacles and emerged as a victor, not a victim, after fiercely battling an addiction, enduring a rigorous recovery program, and successfully completing the CFAT Program in May 2007; and

WHEREAS, now, taking it one day at a time, Ms. Carter is a hairstylist at Ahead of Time Hair Salon in Greenville, Mississippi, and is a student at Mississippi Delta Community College where she is majoring in sociology, striving for her ultimate goal of becoming a drug and alcohol counselor and a mentor for other abused women; and

WHEREAS, Nita desires to inspire these emotionally and physically bruised and battered women to overcome their issues with low self-esteem and realize their potential; and

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights salutes Nita Michelle Carter for her strength and courage, as one who stands in the image of great women who have overcome incredible odds and made it through; and

WHEREAS, the Sojourner Truth Founder's Award was established by the center's founder, Jaribu Hill, to honor women who have braved many storms and now stand as examples for us all; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the zeal of perseverance evidenced by determined, strong-willed and independent women such as Ms. Carter, who has vowed to no longer be a victim, but to be her own champion as well as an advocate for others:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby, in honor of the Ninth Annual Black History Month Celebration, join the Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights in recognizing and saluting Nita Michelle Carter for receiving the Sojourner Truth Founder's Award, and extend best wishes on this auspicious occasion.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Carter and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
