A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND AND ENCOURAGE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA (TAIWAN) AND THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, AND WELCOME THE HONORABLE DIRECTOR GENERAL STEVE CHI-CHANG HSIA TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, the Republic of China (Taiwan) and State of Mississippi have nurtured and maintained a friendship of unwavering bonds over the years that has been and will continue to be beneficial and rewarding for both governments and their citizens for many years to come; and

     WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi has developed a strong relationship with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston, which continually supports and encourages strong cooperation between our respective business communities; and

     WHEREAS, Director General Steve Chi-Chang Hsia of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston will be visiting the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi later this month; and

     WHEREAS, Taiwan is the world's sixteenth largest economy and the United States' eighth largest trading partner, as well as the fifth largest market for agricultural products of the United States; and

     WHEREAS, Mississippi exported $66 million in goods and services to Taiwan in 2012, an 80% increase from 2011, and Taiwan is ranked as the 27th largest export market for Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the participation of Taiwan in the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) will further promote the bilateral trade, business and investment opportunities between the United States and Taiwan; and

     WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of Mississippi look forward to the many years of continued cooperation and friendship that are sure to come between our State and Taiwan; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representative to promote and maintain viable and dynamic relationships with industrial and democratic nations such as Taiwan:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we commend and encourage the relationship between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the State of Mississippi, encourage the Government of United States to begin talks with Taiwan for TPP membership, and welcome the Honorable Director General Steve Chi-Chang Hsia to the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Director General Hsia and to the member of the Capital Press Corps.
