House Resolution 48

(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATION AWARD WINNING ACTOR AND PLAYWRIGHT, MR. JOHN MAXWELL, UPON BEING NAMED A RECIPIENT OF A GOVERNOR'S AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS FOR ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE.

WHEREAS, acclaimed actor and playwright, John Maxwell, of Jackson, Mississippi, was recently one of five Mississippi natives honored by the Mississippi Art Commission and the State of Mississippi with the prestigious Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts in the category of Artistic Excellence on Thursday, February 20, 2014; and

WHEREAS, since the premiere of his one-man show, "Oh, Mr. Faulkner, Do You Write?" at New Stage Theater in Jackson in 1981, Maxwell has been privileged to showcase his talent in that production in more than 12 countries and most of the continental United States, including performances at the Bottom Line (New York), the Smithsonian, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the Alliance Theatre and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, among many others; and

WHEREAS, hailed as "Mississippi's Acting Ambassador," Maxwell, whose screen adaption of "Mr. Faulkner" won Best Actor Award at the 2006 Atlanta Film adaptation, holds a master's degree in theatre from the University of Mississippi and has been the recipient of a Tennessee Williams Scholarship to study playwriting at the Sewanee Writer's Conference; and

WHEREAS, as the founder of the Fish Tales Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to revitalizing interest in the Bible through original drama, Maxwell continues to tour with his paramount freshmen literary piece in addition to his new project, "The Religious Monologues"; and

WHEREAS, the crux of his creative writing ability hinges on dramatic interpretations of Biblical characters being brought to life on stage in his performances of "The Last Epistle," "Fish Tale," "Flower Child," "Giving, and the Son of Joy!," "Me and My Shadow," "Joseph, Father to the Stepson," "The Prodigal" and "Freud's Last Session"; and

WHEREAS, as he continues on the path to Laureate greatness, Mr. Maxwell, who has been a recipient of the W. Alton Jones Foundation Grant for new American plays for his play "The Salvation of Sunshine Billy" and was tapped as one of the top ten new plays for his work entitled "Buck-nekkid for Jesus" during its production at the Atlanta Art Colony, is in the process of commencing production of "The Laramie Project" and "Martha" while working on the script for a play addressing latent racism, with the working title "White Lie"; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend literary and artistic excellence in Mississippi's native sons and daughters, as displayed in the scripts and stage productions of Mr. Maxwell, whose talent and success bestow great pride upon the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate award winning actor and playwright, Mr. John Maxwell, upon being named a recipient of a Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts for Artistic Excellence and extend to him our most sincere wishes for continued success in all his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Maxwell and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
