A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE REMARKABLE CAREER SUCCESS OF ATTORNEY TAKIYAH HERMOINE PERKINS AND CONGRATULATING HER UPON BEING NAMED AS WASHINGTON COUNTY'S NEWEST AND YOUNGEST ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY.

     WHEREAS, in August 2010, Ms. Takiyah Hermoine Perkins gained another rung on her ladder of success in her ascension to become one of the most prominent attorneys to grace the courtrooms of Mississippi, putting her one step closer to achieving the aspired goal of holding political office, after she was named Washington County's newest and youngest assistant district attorney; and

     WHEREAS, in her first 200 days on the job, Attorney Perkins, who hails from an affluent and well-known family of public servants, has made quite an impression on her colleagues, constituents and the community as she enters into the Washington County Courthouse dutifully prepared to handle her daily docket and greeting fellow county employees with a warm smile and strong handshake; and

     WHEREAS, raised and brought up to be respectful and treat others with the same level of dignity she commanded in return, the 28-year-old Perkins, whose mother is a former Mayor of Greenwood and whose father is a revered attorney and the State Representative for House District 32, has striven for excellence in all of her undertakings, in both the academic and professional arenas, as indicated by her success at Tougaloo College, where she received dual bachelor of arts degrees in political science and English with a 3.5 GPA in 2004; at the University of Mississippi School of Law, where she completed her jurisprudence studies as a Council on Legal Education Opportunity Scholar in 2007; as judicial law clerk to the Honorable Vernita King Johnson in the Washington County Youth and County Court (2008 - present); as an adjunct professor in the Criminal Justice Department at Mississippi Valley State University (spring semester 2010); and currently in her new position of authority as Washington County's Assistant District Attorney; and

     WHEREAS, third behind two veteran prosecutors, Jacqui Smith and Kimberly Jones Merchant, Ms. Perkins brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and dedication to service and commitment to justice for all to the table as evidenced by her aforementioned positions, in addition to the internships she has participated in, which include:  the District Attorney Office for Mississippi Fourth Judicial District, Greenwood, Mississippi; North Mississippi Rural Legal Services, Oxford, Mississippi; State of Mississippi Office of the Attorney General - Consumer Protection Division; City of Jackson, Mississippi; Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia; and Law Firm of Willie J. Perkins, Sr.; and

     WHEREAS, described as enthusiastic and tenacious by her colleagues, Attorney Perkins is a hard worker who has her game face on as she enters the courtroom, taking great pride, responsibility and accountability for her work in a conscious effort to give victims closure in order to begin the healing process; and

     WHEREAS, a tied pin Christian, Perkins, who relies daily on the morals and values instilled in her as a child, remains adamant in her refusal to compromise those character traits that have catapulted her to the acclaim she now experiences with a grounded humility; and

     WHEREAS, just as equally committed in her resolve to give back to the local community, as she is to her legal duty to ensure that justice prevails, Attorney Perkins is a proclaimed "public servant" who returns the benefit of her acquired knowledge and skill by sowing seeds of hope and assistance through her involvement with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., her volunteerism and assistance with the Greenville-Weston High Mock Trial Team, which recently placed third in the state competition, through her work with Doris Benford and the 180 Degree program, and other civic organizations; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize the great strides of our state's young professionals, such as Attorney Perkins, whose career success is only overshadowed by her commitment to the service of mankind and to this great state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the remarkable career success of Attorney Takiyah Hermoine Perkins, congratulate her upon being named as Washington County's newest and youngest assistant district attorney and extend warmest wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Attorney Perkins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
