(As Adopted by House)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS MISSISSIPPI TEAM FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN ATHLETICS AND EXTENDING BEST WISHES FOR THEIR SUCCESS AT THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD SUMMER GAMES ATHENS 2011.

WHEREAS, from June 25, 2011, through July 4, 2011, Mississippi's delegation of three athletes and one coach will travel to Athens, Greece, to compete in the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011; and

WHEREAS, Mississippi's athletes, who will be joining with 7,500 Special Olympians from 185 nations in 22 Olympic-type sporting events, will compete in the athletic competitions of bowling and sailing, displaying their innate love and skill of those interests in an effort to achieve the pinnacle of gold medal excellence; and

WHEREAS, through their participation in Special Olympics, these marvelous individuals are afforded an opportunity and are encouraged to develop their physical and mental skills, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community; and

WHEREAS, in Special Olympics, the emphasis is not upon physical strength, speed or endurance of the human body, instead, the emphasis is on the individual's faith, spirit and determination, that bespeaks the true character and worth of all human beings; and

WHEREAS, Mississippi's Special Olympics athletes are coached and inspired by Frank E. Bertucci, Head of Delegation, who will also participate as a member of the USA Unified Sailing Team with his daughter, Lee Anne Bertucci, in addition to encouraging USA women's and men's bowling teams' athletes, Erin Showah and Ben Rogers; and

WHEREAS, Mississippi's Special Olympics delegation is supported by numerous family members, area directors and many other dedicated volunteers; and

WHEREAS, the Special Olympics are the only games in the world where all participating athletes are winners -- winners in their struggle for our respect in their diversity, winners in their struggle for self-esteem, and winners in their struggle to defend their special abilities; and

WHEREAS, the emblem of the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011 is a radiant sun, the source of life that underlines the excellence and power of the athlete that takes part in the games through their depiction in the olive branch and in the spiral form in the center of the sun respectively, and whose colors reflect the Greek landscape and project emotions like passion for life in the warm red, optimism in the orange, determination in the blue, freedom in the light blue and hope in the green; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the citizens of this state, who, by their remarkable courage and ambassadorship for individuals with special needs, are already heralded as champions among us:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the Special Olympics Mississippi Team for their outstanding achievements and extend best wishes for their success at the Special Olympics World Summer Games ATHENS 2011.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the Special Olympics Mississippi Team and to members of the Capitol Press Corps.
