Senate Concurrent Resolution 510
(As Adopted by Senate and House)
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2011 NOXAPATER HIGH SCHOOL "TIGERS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND COACH TYLER PETERSON FOR WINNING THE TEAM'S FIRST CLASS 1A MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, "The third time's a charm." It is an old saying that fits the Noxapater High School "Tigers" Football Team well as they won their first-ever Mississippi High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class 1A State Championship on December 2, 2011, by defeating the Shaw Hawks 21-10 at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The stands of Mississippi Memorial Stadium were filled with red and black as fans and supporters of the Tigers came out in droves to witness the school's Championship. Many of those had taken the day off work, as well as the school not having classes for the day, allowing students to make the trip to Jackson; and
WHEREAS, after making previous trips to the State Championship Game in 1986 and 1999, the Tigers (12-3) finished their magical 2011 season with their first-ever Golden Trophy. Head Coach Tyler Peterson has now won a State Championship as a player, assistant and head coach; and
WHEREAS, Tray Baber rushed for 160 yards on 19 carries and scored a touchdown, quarterback Ethan Hamilton also had a rushing touchdown for Noxapater and Barrett Carter sealed it with a 65-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter that made it 21-0 in the Championship Game. Noxapater started the season 0-3, losing to Ackerman, Eupora and Kemper County, then the Tigers reeled off 12 straight wins to claim the 2011 title. Noxapater finished the season 12-3, making it one of their best season records in recent years. They also claimed the Class 1A Region 3 Division Title and defeated rival Nanih Waiya, also feats that had not been accomplished in recent years, and the team was ranked No. 2 in The Clarion-Ledger 1A rankings. After the Championship Game, the players and coaches celebrated on the field, were presented with gold medals and received the State Championship Trophy to bring home to Winston County, as the crowd of Tiger supporters lingered in the stands to take a look at their championship team and share the victory; and
WHEREAS, during the first round of the 2010 playoffs, Coach Tyler Peterson and his Noxapater Tigers made a stop in Jackson so the team could get a look at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium; Coach Peterson hid a football in the ceiling of one of the locker rooms and gave his team a short speech. "Let's get back here and get that football," recalled Peterson. A year later, Noxapater returned, got the football and picked up a State Championship Trophy to go with it; and
WHEREAS, the 2011 Noxapater "Tigers" Football Team Roster: Anthony Brown, TE/LB; Tyrell Carter, QB/LB; David Parker, TE/LB; Austin Mcadory, RB/OLB; Gregory McBeath, WR/DB; Trey Baber, RB/LB; Katorris Coburn, RB/LB; Jaquan Williams, WR/DB; Barrett Carter, WR/DB; Justin Robertson, WR/FS; Marshall Kugle, TE/LB; Ethan Hamilton, QB/DB; Anthony Coburn, WR/DB; Zach Kemp, WR/DB; Colby Jones, WR/DB; Austin Barrett, WR/DB; Chris Johnson, RB/LB; Lakevin Smith, RB/OLB; Nick Strehle, RB/LB; Jarius Carter, WR/DB; Justus Barfield, TE/DE; and Aaron Ellingburg, RB/LB; Head Coach Tyler Peterson; Assistant Coach Austin Wilbanks; and
WHEREAS, with such a successful season, a Championship Title is almost like "icing on the cake" for the Tigers. They were able to achieve their goals with dedicated work ethic, teamwork, and the brilliance of a dedicated coaching staff. This is a recipe of success, and it turned out to be one the Tigers hope will continue in the upcoming seasons; and it is with great pride that we recognize this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the 2011 Noxapater High School "Tigers" Football Team and Coach Tyler Peterson for winning their first MHSAA Class 1A State Championship and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future athletic and academic success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Peterson and Principal Glenn Stevens for the team, forwarded to the Winston County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
