A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE LAMAR HIGH SCHOOL "RAIDERS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH MAC BARNES FOR WINNING THE MAIS CLASS AAA DIVISION II STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, Lamar High School senior defensive tackle Jonathan Young stopped a fourth-and-1 play and Lamar held off Magnolia Heights 28-21 to claim the Academy AAA-II State Championship at Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton, Mississippi, on November 23, 2013. It is the third State Title for the Raiders (11-3) in school history; and
WHEREAS, freshman quarterback Davis Harrison threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 5-yard pass to Lee Martin with 5 minutes left that gave Lamar its final margin of victory. "This is one of the most special wins I have ever been a part of," Lamar Coach Mac Barnes said. "I never thought we'd be hoisting a trophy with a ninth-grader starting at quarterback. He is something special." Martin added a 15-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for the Raiders. Richard Covington caught an 11-yard touchdown pass from Harrison and also had a 34-yard interception return for a score; and
WHEREAS, Lee Martin, Jesse Seale and Jonathan Young were selected to play in the MAIS All-Star Football Game; and

WHEREAS, Lamar High School's sports teams are established for the purpose of participation in and enjoyment of the competitive experience. Sports are an integral part of our school community and serve to provide its participants with developmental traits inherent in the athletic experience: the spirit of cooperation and camaraderie, the struggle to achieve, the attainment of common goals, and the total team aspect; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Lamar High School "Raiders" Football Team and Head Coach Mac Barnes for winning the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class AAA Division II State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Barnes and Headmaster Leigh Ann Ballou, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of Lamar School, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
